Like many people, I always liked the idea of camping, but I had never really jumped all the way in. The thought of getting away from the noise of everyday life and spending time outdoors always appealed to me. Still, I wasn’t sure if camping was something I would truly enjoy long term.
Before spending a lot of money on equipment or a big camper, I talked to a friend who had been camping for years. His advice was simple and honest. He told me not to invest a whole lot of money right away because I might discover that camping just wasn’t for me. Instead, he suggested starting small and practical.
His recommendation was to buy a pop-up camper.
A pop-up would give me a comfortable place to sleep, some protection from the weather, and a chance to experience camping without making a huge financial commitment. It sounded like the perfect way to test the waters and see if this lifestyle was really something I would enjoy.
That simple piece of advice changed everything.
Not long after that conversation, I found myself looking at a vintage camper that caught my attention — a 1985 Coleman Sequoia folding camping trailer. It had character, history, and the kind of simplicity that made camping feel approachable rather than overwhelming.
Instead of buying something brand new, I decided to bring this classic camper back to life.
Over time, I began renovating and improving the camper, making it comfortable while still keeping the original spirit of the vintage pop-up design. What started as a simple experiment turned into something much bigger. I realized that camping gave me something I didn’t even know I needed — quiet time, fresh air, and the chance to slow down.
Today, I use that same renovated 1985 Coleman Sequoia for my solo camping adventures. I’ve learned that camping doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. Sometimes the best experiences come from simple setups, practical gear, and a peaceful campsite.
